I don’t much like posts of the “too busy to post” type but I thought I’d better get something up before everyone thinks I’ve died or something. I’ve just been very busy since Carl was born, busy and happy. It’s like there was a little Carl-shaped space in our lives and he slipped right into it; I’ve taken to being a mother of two with more grace than I expected. But then, not being pregnant anymore casts the whole world in a rosy glow.
I’ve continued teaching my two on-line classes without a break, which is a great part of why I’ve hardly written a word. I finished my last round of essay grading last night, and just have to do final grades next week, and then I’ll have a full month off before I teach a course in the summer session. Carl is almost six weeks old but I am looking forward to that month as my real maternity leave.
Carl has put on nearly a pound a week for the last four weeks and weighed in at an even ten pounds yesterday morning. There are some early pictures of him up here , and he looks even better now that his jaundice has cleared up. He does have baby acne, which Eric never did, prompting me to begin an experiment of twelve years’ duration in which we wait to see whether infant acne is a predictor of adolescent acne.
Carl is delighting us by developing a pre-smile face in the last few days. I remember Eric having it, too. It starts before the baby can actually smile, but it’s unmistakably the face of a baby about to smile. I saw it four times yesterday evening alone.
He is managing his pound a week by eating a great many times every day, which keeps me busy. I do not expect he’ll sleep through the night at seven weeks like Eric did; I think I’ll be up nursing at night for some time to come. But that’s OK. I’m getting good at sleeping while he eats.
I have many things to write about, and in the coming teaching-free days look forward to writing them. I have a list of teaching-related topics, some Quaker-related topics, and, of course, some kid-related topics as well.
