Children sometimes learn things we don't teach them. Yesterday Eric surprised me twice.
First, he was eating alphabet cookies, which are little square cookies that each have a letter on them. Eric knows some letters, but every time he identifies a new one, I get excited. Today, he bit off part of a cookie and announced, "This was an O but now it's a C." I said, "May I see it?" He held it out. He was right.
I greeted the other bit of mystery knowledge with less joy. Eric picked up a small white cylinder, part of a larger toy. He held it to his mouth and inhaled and exhaled enthusiastically. "I'm doing a cigarette!" he announced.
