The Curious Incident

David and I have both just read The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, by Mark Haddon. It's a short novel, told from the perspective of an autistic teenager who sets out to solve the mystery of who killed his neighbor's dog. The book is a quick read, and quite good, though I think most of its value lies in its consistent point-of-view and voice. Haddon has created a unique character and chosen to tell the story from inside his head, and it's quite an accomplishment. The plot itself is both slight and sensational: the secret affair, the dead mother who's not really dead.

I am happy that on page 73 Haddon offers a quote I was trying to find and couldn't when I wrote about The Hound of the Baskervilles on my other blog recently, which is:

The world is full of obvious things which nobody by any chance ever observes.
