The Sorcerer's Apprentice

I stepped out of the kitchen for a moment while Eric, now 2 years and 8 days old, was putting two scoops of dog food into Dax's bowl. Specifically, I stepped to my computer to wake it up and tell it to check e-mail. Before I knew it, without meaning to, I was reading e-mail. When I finally remembered Eric--who loves to scoop!--and returned to the kitchen, the scene that greeted me was right out of The Sorcerer's Apprentice: Dax's bowl was full to the brim, and then some. Eric stood poised over it, full scoop of Innova in his hand, ready to pour the nuggets that would inevitably lead to overflow. Ten seconds later, and I'd have had to invite the neighborhood dogs in to help clean up.

Eric went to bed very late last night, and as a result has been volatile this morning. Just now, I decided it was time to put him down for Quiet Time, which usually leads to a nap. He screamed as I carried him to his room, a sure sign that a nap is what he needs--if he's merely a little tired, or not tired at all, he says, "Quiet time!" and cheerfully trots after me to his bed.

He continued screaming as I peeled him off me and put him on the bed. "No, Mama, up, up, cuddle, cuddle, no, up, up!" Kira, distressed by the crying, followed us to the bedroom and wagged nervously, her tail thumping the door. This led to the following scene:

Eric screaming as above: "No, no, up, up, mama cuddle!" Pause. Calmly: "What's that?"

Mama: "That's the sound of Kira's tail hitting the door as she wags."

Eric looks at Kira, observes wagging. "Oh." Pause. Resumes screaming: "No, no, up, up, mama cuddle!"
