Book Fast: Three Days In

As I promised, I have not read a book since Tuesday afternoon. When I vowed to spend a week without books, I thought there would be something dramatic to report every day of that week. But in fact I've had such busy days that I haven't had time to pine. I did have a rough moment when I got an e-mail notice that I book I requested has arrived at the library for me: I finally decided that picking it up, as long as I didn't read it, would be OK.

Yesterday was Friday, and as usual on Fridays I had an extra kid, Eric's 3-year-old friend Aidan. I did notice that not being in the middle of a book helped me greet the boys more cheerfully when they got up from their nap, and made the decision to take them to the park instead of making them play on the living room floor easier. When I'm caught up in a book, sometimes it's like it exerts a pull on me; I have to fight against it to do almost anything else. It was good not to have to fight that pull yesterday; the boys and I had a great time.

Also, I went to bed at 9:00 last night. David and I are both sick with sinus infections, and started antibiotics yesterday. One of the symptoms is fatigue. Sometimes it wipes me out just to climb the flight of stairs from the basement after putting in a load of laundry. Because I didn't take a book to bed, planning to read for "just a few minutes," I actually went to sleep instead of staying up hours longer than I should have. I slept almost eleven hours.

I'll be curious to see what taking up reading again is like. Will I be like a drunk who can't take a single drink without binging, or will I navigate the narrow path to moderation?
