8 months, 3 days old

Last Thursday at playgroup Eric managed to get himself scooted up onto Yvonne's (pronounced "why-von"; our ACTS "parent educator") lap in such a way that his hands were on her leg while his knees were on the ground--it was just like being on all fours on the floor except that his front end was higher. I thought, "That's the beginning of something. He's going to figure out he can get higher and then there will be no stopping him." Since then, he has often managed to elevate his front end by, for instance, getting his hands up onto his Boppy pillow. Today I came into the room just in time to see him pulling himself up onto his Crawl-n-Cruise Playground so that he was upright--but still on his knees. It was very funny. Less than 10 minutes later, I looked up from my magazine to see him kneeling unsupported. He had pulled up on the Crawl-n-Cruise and then released his hands. It only lasted for about 5 seconds before he grabbed on again, but I believe it was the beginning of something indeed.

Eric still doesn't crawl. He humps himself all around, though. The other day he followed Scott right into the kitchen, revealing that he had expanded his range by a factor of 3. Now he follows me into the kitchen, too. The kitchen is very exciting. I'm just glad I got those cabinet locks on in time. He also goes after people. He will be playing, look up and see me, and scoot himself right over for a visit. That is a heart-melting moment, I can tell you.

He's going to wake up any minute, I think. He's been sleeping almost three hours. For the first 90 minutes of a nap, I am happy and enjoy doing things without worrying about the baby. By about two hours, I start to miss him. By two and a half hours, I start turning the volume up on the monitor so I can hear him breathing and be sure he's still OK. If he doesn't get up soon, I will get him up. It's after 4, and I want to get to the grocery store--we're supposed to get a lot of snow and freezing rain dumped on us tonight and it would be good to have food in the house.

He had a really big day yesterday. He went to the Family Growth Center in the morning, and had such a good time that he didn't nap while he was there. He slept for about 20 minutes when we got home, then woke up for our home visit with Yvonne (at which we learned more about baby brain development). I thought he'd crash then, but he stayed up, and I finally loaded us up in the car and left early for a vet appointment, figuring that if he was too wound up to sleep, being in the car would lull him to dreamland. It did, but then he woke up at the vet and charmed everyone and coo'd at the cat. He finally went down in the car on the way home, and stayed down in a big way. Lately, if it's close to nap time so that he goes to sleep in the car, he will often stay asleep through being taken out of the car, being carried up the crib, and being wrestled out of his warm fuzzy. He doesn't always go right to sleep anymore, if there are good things going on, but once he goes, he's gone.

He's up--better get him in a clean diaper and get the two of us to Meijer. We don't want to be snowed in without frozen waffles and Dole Organic Spring Mix salad bags.
