A Birth Story; Not Mine

Wednesday night Eric slept until 6:40 with only a little wiggle he handled himself at 5 a.m. Last night he slept from 10 until 7:40 with just a little pacifier assist at 4 a.m. Good baby.

I went to my second Mothers & More meeting last night. I was running late, having done a bunch of errands that took longer than I expected (and having gotten a late start, as happens when there's a baby). But I'm glad I went, if only to hear a really good story. Last month, there was a woman there who was just a few days away from her due date with her second child. Two nights after the meeting, she had the baby--in the front passenger seat of a Camry doing 80 m.p.h. on the freeway. She caught the baby herself because her husband was busy driving and talking to the 911 dispatcher. She was in labor a total of about 25 minutes, they think, though their best guess of when the baby was born is based on the recorded time of the 911 call, 4:41 a.m., at which time the baby's head and shoulders were already out. She said, "I didn't even have a chance to recline the seat." We all wondered how she managed it; I know I studied the front passenger seat of my Camry on the way home, and thought, "No way." Unfortunately, her memory is hazy and she can't remember how she got her shorts off (though she thinks her husband helped, raising the question of how many hands he has, exactly) or what position she delivered the baby in.

It's an exciting story but she says it still terrifies her to think what might have happened if there had been even a minor complication with the birth. I thought, like the cord being around the baby's neck twice and him coming out blue and floppy, like Eric did? Even as it was, the baby's body temperature dropped and she ended up needing a whole battery of tests. They were concerned about infection. But mother and baby are both doing well now.

Today I am chugging away at things; it's only 10:40 and my to-do list is pretty much accomplished. I have done my laundry, run a load of dishes, finished my exercises, updated money stuff on the computer. I just need to eat a quick sandwich, and bathe the baby and myself, and we are off to my parents' for the afternoon.
